The HERO8 Black and the HERO7 Black are essentially the same GoPro internally.

They offer the same video resolution and frame rates, use the same chipset, and support the same microSD cards. The major differences lie in the "body design changes" and "image stabilization differences" discussed below.

Differences in Mounting Method

The HERO8 Black is the first GoPro series model to feature a built-in mounting system. Previous models required a case to connect the camera to GoPro mount accessories, but the HERO8 has foldable mount prongs on the bottom of the camera. This allows it to mount to accessories without needing a case.

The HERO8 Black is waterproof up to 10m (33ft) without a case, so a case is not an essential accessory. This built-in mounting mechanism contributes to a lighter overall weight and reduces the amount of gear you need to carry, making a significant difference in practical use.

Differences in Image Stabilization

GoPro's proprietary image stabilization feature "HyperSmooth" was first introduced in the HERO7 series. The HERO8 Black features the next version, "HyperSmooth 2.0." While the HERO7 allowed HyperSmooth to be used only at high frame rates, the HERO8 enables HyperSmooth at any frame rate and includes the new "Boost Mode," offering even stronger stabilization. This enhancement makes the HERO8 Black's image stabilization more practical and powerful compared to its predecessor.
