Shooting Performance and Features: A Significant Gap
When comparing shooting performance, the difference between HERO11 Black and HERO (2018) is striking.
The HERO11 Black supports 5.3K/60fps, as well as high frame rates of 120fps or higher at any resolution. In contrast, the HERO (2018) is limited to 1080p/60fps. This difference alone makes a significant impact on video quality and versatility.
In terms of shooting features, the HERO11 Black also outshines its counterpart. It is equipped with HyperSmooth 5.0 stabilization, which includes 360-degree horizon lock and auto boost, while the HERO (2018) only offers standard stabilization.
Additionally, the HERO11 Black boasts advanced features such as 10-bit color, live streaming, and loop recording, making it far more versatile than the HERO (2018).
Major Differences in Body Features
Beyond shooting capabilities, the two models also differ greatly in their body features.
The HERO11 Black includes a color front display for previews and a built-in foldable mount for easy attachment to accessories. In contrast, the HERO (2018) only has a monochrome front display for basic information and lacks a built-in mount. This means a case is always required to connect accessories to the HERO (2018), adding bulk and weight.
There is also a difference in microSD card support. The HERO11 Black can accommodate cards up to 512GB, while the HERO (2018) is limited to 128GB. However, considering the HERO (2018) can only record in Full HD, 128GB is generally sufficient for its capabilities.
Size and Weight: HERO (2018) Is Smaller and Lighter
The HERO (2018) is slightly smaller and lighter compared to the HERO11 Black. However, since the HERO (2018) requires a case for accessory mounting, the size and weight advantage may diminish during actual use.
Given that both models are similar in size and weight when in operation, the HERO11 Black emerges as the clear choice due to its superior performance and features. While the price difference is a factor, the HERO11 Black justifies its cost with significant advancements in functionality. Choosing the HERO (2018) at this point is less practical given its limitations.
