The standout feature of the GoPro HERO (2018) is its price. At $199, which is $200 cheaper than the traditional GoPro models, it’s an attractive option for entry-level users.

While the flagship HERO Black models are priced at over $300, making them a more serious investment, this sub-$200 model makes GoPro more accessible. It can serve not only for action scenes but also as a lighter, more portable alternative to a smartphone or video camera.

Given that HERO (2018) now feels underpowered since its successors HERO (2024) and LIT HERO (2025) have launched, it’s understandable—but precisely because used prices have dropped, it’s still a sensible pick as an easy, grab‑and‑go camera.

Adequate Specs for Hobby Use

As an entry-level model, the HERO (2018) has reduced performance, but it still supports two formats ideal for hobby use: 1440p at 60fps and 1080p at 60fps. In terms of specs, it’s similar to the HERO4 Silver, without the 4K and 2.7K support.

While its resolution may fall short for professional use, it’s more than sufficient for hobbyists. You don’t need to worry about it being "low spec" for casual shooting.

If the HERO (2018) feels lacking in imaging performance, it’s better to choose the best GoPro based on shooting capabilities.

Unlike the HERO6 Black, which features a "loop recording" mode that saves footage in intervals for continuous recording, the HERO (2018) does not have this function.

Loop recording is essential for capturing action scenes without missing moments, and it's also a must-have for those wanting to use their GoPro as a dashcam. Be mindful of this limitation.
