What Are GoPro Voice Control Commands?

GoPro Voice Control Commands, introduced with the GoPro HERO5 and later models, allow users to control their GoPro using voice commands.

As the name suggests, this feature lets you operate your GoPro by speaking to it, enabling you to start or stop recording and turn the device on or off.

Think of it as a simplified version of "Hey, Siri" or "OK Google" on your smartphone.

How to Use GoPro Voice Control Commands

Using GoPro Voice Control Commands is straightforward. You simply speak specific commands to your GoPro. The basic format is "GoPro + command."

However, unlike "Hey, Siri" or "OK Google," which can recognize a range of similar phrases, GoPro Voice Control Commands require you to use exact phrases.

For example, if you want to start recording a video, you need to say "GoPro start recording." Phrases like "GoPro video" or "GoPro begin video" won't work. You must use the exact command.

Models and Voice Control Command List

GoPro Voice Control Commands vary depending on model generation¹:

1. MISSION 1 Series (9 supported commands)
2. LIT HERO / HERO (2024) (8 supported commands)
3. HERO9 to HERO11 / MAX2
4. HERO11 Black Mini
5. HERO5 to HERO8

Below is a summary of the commands you can use with each model, following the format "GoPro,":

• *1: Supported on HERO6 Black, HERO7 Black, HERO8 Black, and HERO9 only (not supported on HERO5 series, HERO7 Silver/White, HERO10 and later, or MAX2)
• *2: Supported on HERO7 and HERO8 only (introduced in HERO7; not available on HERO5/6)
• *3: Supported on HERO5 to HERO7 only (removed starting with HERO8)

While basic commands remain standard, the MISSION 1 series (9 commands) and entry-level models such as LIT HERO / HERO (2024) (8 commands: Capture, Stop Capture, Start Recording, Stop Recording, Take a Photo, Turn Off, Video Mode, Photo Mode) feature streamlined command sets. Additionally, MAX2 supports 13 commands (all 14 commands supported on HERO9 to HERO11 except for "Turn On").

Note that "Capture" and "Stop Capture" were introduced starting with the HERO7 series (not available on HERO5/6), "Turn On" is supported on select models only (HERO6 Black, HERO7 Black, HERO8 Black, HERO9), and legacy commands like "Burst Mode" and "That Was Sick" were removed starting with HERO8. HERO11 Black Mini also supports a reduced set of commands.

You Can Use Wireless Audio with GoPro HERO12 and Later

Starting with the HERO12 Black, GoPro cameras support Bluetooth audio, allowing you to use voice control commands with paired wireless earphones or microphones.

In typical GoPro usage, the camera is often mounted on clothing or a helmet, so there may not be many situations where this feature is necessary. However, for activities like surfing (when the camera is mounted at the tip of a board) or attaching it to the end of a bike, voice commands may not reach the camera's built-in mic. In such cases, wireless audio becomes extremely convenient.

A major advantage is that you can use the microphone on everyday wireless earphones, such as Apple AirPods, to control your GoPro with voice commands, even if you don't have a dedicated microphone.
