What is "Log" in Video?
"Log" in video shooting formats refers to a shooting format with a wide dynamic range. When shooting videos in Log encoding format, it allows more flexible image adjustments in post-production compared to regular videos.
If you're familiar with digital cameras, you might think, "Isn't this similar to RAW?" It's a bit different. Log footage sits between RAW and standard Rec.709 video—retaining high dynamic range and information while remaining compressed.
Log-shot videos are processed in post-production using "Look Up Tables (LUTs)" to restore color depth and smooth color gradients during color grading.
GoPro's Log Format (GP-Log / GP-Log2)
GoPro introduced support for Log format for the first time in the HERO12 Black, known as "GP-Log." Models such as the HERO13 Black, MAX 2, and the compact cinema camera MISSION 1 series (MISSION 1, MISSION 1 PRO, etc.) also feature Log encoding.
GoPro offers two versions of Log formatting: GP-Log, which is supported up to HERO13 Black, and GP-Log2, which is supported by the MISSION 1 series.
GP-Log2
- Supported Models: MISSION 1 series (MISSION 1, MISSION 1 PRO, etc.)
- Features: Inherits the core benefits of 10-bit color and LUT usage for wide dynamic range, but improved to deliver a more natural, realistic color tone closer to what the eye sees during color grading.
GP-Log
- Supported Models: HERO12 Black, HERO13 Black, MAX 2, etc.
- Features: Uses 10-bit color encoding to maximize dynamic range recording. Designed for color grading using LUTs to express deeper color depth and smooth gradients.
Both formats serve professional color grading workflows, but GP-Log2 is tuned for newer, larger sensors to achieve more natural color reproduction.
Note that Log footage appears desaturated and flat out of the camera. If you do not plan to perform color grading in post-production, shooting in standard color mode is recommended. Also, HDR mode, which enhances video quality in bright and dark areas by synthesizing multiple exposures in real-time during shooting, works differently from Log shooting, which involves post-production color adjustment.
