- 4th Generation: GoPro HERO 13 and MISSION 1 Series (MISSION 1 / PRO / PRO ILS).

The first-generation GoPro models (from the original HERO to HERO4) used unique battery designs and specifications for each model, making it impossible to use older batteries with newer models.

While many recent models share a similar shape, there are critical differences in specs, such as the high-performance Enduro / Enduro 2 battery requirements for 4th-generation models (HERO13 and MISSION 1 series). Note that batteries from GoPro HERO4 and earlier are not cross-compatible and are excluded from the comparison below.

4th Generation GoPro Batteries: AGBAT-001 / AEBAT-001
The 4th-generation batteries introduced with HERO13 Black and the MISSION 1 series include the "AGBAT-001" (Enduro 2) and "AEBAT-001" (Enduro). The AEBAT-001 provides a 1,900mAh capacity, while the higher-capacity Enduro 2 (AGBAT-001) steps that up to 2,150mAh. Because the physical dimensions and pin layouts differ completely from 3rd-generation packs, older batteries will not fit or work.
Among 4th-gen options, the higher-capacity Enduro 2 (AGBAT-001) isn't just optimized for MISSION 1 cameras—it also works seamlessly in the HERO13 Black to significantly extend shooting times (and unlocks fast charging when paired with a MISSION 1 body).
While the standard HERO13 Black battery (AEBAT-001) can also power MISSION 1 cameras, opting for the 2,150mAh AGBAT-001 yields a huge real-world advantage in battery life. If you're purchasing new spare batteries today for either a HERO13 Black or MISSION 1, going with the AGBAT-001 (Enduro 2) is by far the smarter move.

3rd Generation GoPro Battery: ADBAT-011/ADBAT-001
The batteries used from the GoPro HERO9 to HERO12 are "ADBAT-011" and "ADBAT-001." Up to HERO10 Black, the base battery "ADBAT-001" was standard, while HERO11 and 12 come standard with the Enduro battery "ADBAT-011." These are incompatible with the 2nd-generation batteries.
Both 3rd-generation GoPro batteries feature a 1,720mAh capacity—about 40% larger than the 2nd generation—enabling longer recording times in high-power modes like 4K.
The "ADBAT-011" Enduro model is marketed as "high endurance," but its capacity is the same as the base battery. However, swapping to ADBAT-011 in pre-HERO11 models allows for up to 40% longer shooting and up to 13% faster charging. It's designed to maintain stable performance in cold environments, such as skiing1.

Because these batteries are compatible up to the fairly recent HERO 12 Black, it's recommended to buy spares while they're still available.

While HERO 9–12 batteries look similar to HERO 13, they are not physically compatible due to the new terminal design of AEBAT-001.
2nd Generation GoPro Battery: AJBAT-001/AABAT-001-AS
The 2nd generation adopted by GoPro HERO 5 through HERO 8 includes "AABAT-001-AS" which originates from the GoPro HERO 5 series, and "AJBAT-001" which originates from the GoPro HERO 8 series and supports high output. Both are compatible with each other, but they are not compatible with 4th generation GoPro batteries or 3rd generation GoPro batteries. Also, note that GoPro HERO 8 is not compatible with the older model battery "AABAT-001-AS".
Both 2nd generation GoPro batteries have a somewhat limited battery capacity of 1220mAh, so spare batteries are almost essential for long recording sessions. For a full day of shooting, you may need 5 or more batteries, so you'll want to purchase not only spare batteries but also a charging box that can charge multiple batteries simultaneously.
